An excellent book about the Portuguese Water Dog written by Carla Molinari is available
in English from Paws 4 Pets and outlines the history of the breed and even the inception of
Water Trials by António Constant back in 1978.

Portuguese Water Dogs are Working Dogs and have been used
to help fishermen drag their nets and collect floats etc.
They are also, as far as we are aware, exempt from the ban on dogs on the beaches
in the Summer
( as should all dogs be if they have responsible owners!) |
Level I
-
Provas Prácticas / Practical Tests
(Swimming, Retrieval and Diving) |
|
Prova / Test A |
Swimming Ability
The dog should start from a sitting position on the left of the handler.
Both handler and dog enter the water and swim together around 2 buoys and return
to the beach.
The dog should come to a position in front of the handler and then return to a seated
position on the left of the handler.
The judge will be observing how the dog enters the water, the speed around the circuit
(which is timed) and the style of swimming.
In Level II the test is more demanding as the dog must swim with the handler in
a random pattern for 2 minutes |
 |
|
Prova / Test B |
Retrieval
The dog should start seated on the left of the handler.
The handler then leaves the dog in its seated position, walks away and throws a FLOATING object into the water then returns to his original position.
The dog then swims out and retrieves the object, returns it and places it in front
of the handler before returning (around the right hand side of the handler) to the
seated position on the left hand side of the handler.
The judge will observe how the dog tracks the object and how decisively the dog
retrieves it and returns it to the handler.
In Level II the handler returns to position a few metres behind his starting point
but now facing away from the water. The dog must then retrieve the object and bring
it back to the handler - again finishing on the handler's left hand side. |
 |
|
Prova / Test C |
Diving and
Retrieval
The dog should start seated on the left of the handler.
The handler then goes into the water with the dog and drops a Semi-Submersible object into the water.
The dog should then dive underwater and retrieve the object, return it to the shore
with the handler and
places it in front of the handler before returning (around the right hand side of
the handler) to the seated position on the left hand side of the handler.
In practice the handler will walk out to around 1 metre depth and the semi-submersible
object will sink to around 200mm.
The judge will observe how the dog tracks the object and how the dog dives to retrieve
it, the capability of holding it´s breath while diving, the depth and the success
of the retrieval.
In Level II the handler will throw the object from the waters edge and the dog must
then enter the water and retrive the object.
