Self Training hints
Always think positively! A dog has to learn what is acceptable just like a child.
An owner also needs to be trained, probably more than their pet!
Positive training is effective and kind to both your dog and yourself. You
should aim to reward good behaviour rather than scold bad behaviour. If you need
to say "NO" then say it firmly - physical abuse will NOT work. A "Timeout" area
can work wonders - tell you pet to STAY! but it should only need a few seconds as
the pet will forget why it has been left there so do the "GOOD BOY" bit and both
carry on from where you left off..
When training always carry some "Coachies" and
give one to your pet as a reward when he does what you want. It's like giving a
kid a Smartie. We also have handy carrying pouches for the coachies.
To help train your dog to walk without pulling - use a "Halti"
head collar - this automatically directs the head without necessitating pulling
on the lead or causing suffering as with a choke chain. It's easy for you and your
pet and it will walk with you - a wonderful experience.
Dogs need company - they are part of the family and need to be included in activities.
If you have to leave them alone and locked up for a while make sure that they have
something to keep them occupied. A stuffed "Kong"
or a "Snak Attack"
will give them something more enjoyable to chew than the sofa! The "Snak Attack"
will also help to control tartar on their teeth and the resultant bad breath.
Discuss your life and the world with your pet - it won't come up with any real answers
or even understand what you are saying but it increases the bonding and helps to
make the pet feel wanted - it helps to reduce stress and blood pressure for both
of you. If your pet wanders off then change the subject!
A DOG IS FOR LIFE - NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS
Do NOT buy a pet as a surprise for a friend unless they really want
it - so it can't be a real surprise
If you are not intending to breed from your pet then HAVE IT NEUTERED!
A neutered pet can concentrate on being part of the family instead of reproduction |
